"As Chinese enterprises participate in the global market, they are expected not only to integrate global resources, but also to exert due cultural influence. It's time to integrate our culture to the globalization", said Wu Changqi, professor of Guanghua School of Management at Peking University.
On February 17th this year, Geely Group and Sanya University inaugurated the Research Center for Global Corporate Culture at Sanya University. It is the first research center and think-tank in China for the study of corporate culture establishment. Experts and scholars from home and abroad came to Sanya to discuss how global enterprises are to cope with cross-cultural challenges.
During the Launching Ceremony, Geely Corporation President Li Shufu presented the plague “Research Center for Global Corporate Culture” to Lu Dan, president of Sanya University. Li Shufu will serve as president of the Research Center and he appointed the former Dean of the Guanghua School of Management, Professor of Strategic Management Wu Changqi as executive vice president and research director of the Center. Professor of Sociology, Lu Dan will serve as vice president, and the other esteemed professors attending the ceremony will serve as directors and researchers.
The concept of a research center to study global corporate culture was first conceived by Li Shufu in 2011 in his pursuit of constructing global corporations. Throughout a year of promotion and development, the idea has been welcomed and acknowledged by many experts and scholars throughout the world. They have shown great interest in and support for the research and promotion of this new research center for global corporate culture since Chinese companies are quickly expanding to enter overseas markets and foreign corporations are expanding their footprint in China. Companies in this global market need to develop in a win-win mode. Geely's initiative will fuel the formation and development of a new global corporate culture and benefit the implementation of its own globalization strategy.
The Research Center will have two research bases: Beijing and Gothenburg, Sweden. Research will be conducted in trans-national, social and corporate cultures. The Center and its two research bases are dedicated to facilitating the shaping of a new global corporate culture and assisting Chinese companies and foreign corporations with cultural integration and management.
The Center plans to carry out cultural comparison and research with respect to Chinese, Swedish and Belgian cultures, including analysis of advantages and disadvantages in corporate competitiveness and management in an effort to enhance mutual understanding between Chinese management and their European counterparts.
The Center's research group is composed of executives from Geely and Volvo, which was acquired by Geely in 2010, and technical automotive experts and university professors from different countries. The group will cooperate globally and organize exchanges with other universities, think-tanks, consulting institutes and governmental agencies.
On the 18th of February, President Lu Dan accepted a media interview and stated that the establishment of the Research Center at Sanya University is an important event in the development of our University. He indicated that the University will focus its research on the values of global corporate culture, and provide a vehicle for continued development. He added that the establishment of the research center in Sanya exhibits Geely’s gratitude to Hainan and its affirmation of Sanya University.
Geely Holding Group had considered many sites for the location of the research center. After consideration of Beijing, Gothenburg and Sanya, Geely finally chose Sanya as its primary research center being responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of all major research. The other two cities will be established as supportive research bases. President Lu Dan said that one of the reasons the research center was established in Sanya is that Li Shufu has been in Hainan for many years. He has a deep affection for Hainan and great gratitude and appreciation for the Hainan government and the people of Hainan. Therefore he hopes to make a contribution to Hainan in the establishment of the research center. It also reflects Geely’s trust and affirmation of Sanya University’s rapid development in the past 7 years.
Today, humanity still longs for a harmonious world. The globe is confronted with conflicts over politics, race, religion, culture, economic interests and military activity. However, economic globalization and trade liberalization are powerful forces for a achieving a peaceful future.
Just as numerous foreign companies are flocking to China, many Chinese businesses are breaking into overseas markets and integrating with the global economy in the international community. In this environment, the formation and development of a global corporate culture can assist in both the sustainable development of China and the stabilization of the global economy, generating a significant impact on world peace and the well-being of human beings.
